Former Man Utd striker Dimitar Berbatov has admitted he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Donny van de Beek began exit talks with the club.

The midfielder has spent a lot of time on the bench this season, only completing one full match in the Premier League so far.

His situation has led to Dutch legend Ronald de Boer suggesting he could leave Old Trafford.

Berbatov has now provided his stance on the situation involving van de Beek. Speaking to Betfair, he said: “I don’t know what is going on with him.

“I said before he signed that I like him as a player, he was great for Ajax and his national team, but now he can’t get a game at United. I don’t watch the training sessions and the little time he does get on the pitch isn’t enough to judge him.

“He needs a run of games in a row to give him confidence. I can see that his confidence isn’t high at the moment, and that’s normal because when you don’t play you start punishing yourself and ask questions of yourself.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he is starting to look for the exit and nobody will blame him. Something isn’t working.”

Van de Beek joined from Ajax for £40 million in the summer, but the transfer hasn’t worked out just yet.

He has failed to get into the first team regularly due to the form of teammate Bruno Fernandes.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also struggles to play those two alongside Paul Pogba in an effective formation.

Van de Beek came on as a substitute in the recent Carabao Cup semi final loss to Man City.

That game was seen as arguably the last straw for him at Old Trafford. He eventually came on late in the match but didn’t have a significant impact.

It looks like the player could be nearing an early exit from Man Utd.
