Edu has suggested that William Saliba’s loan move to Nice is going to be great for the Arsenal youngster’s development.
The 19-year-old came through the ranks with Saint-Ettiene. He made 19 appearances in all competitions for their senior side during the 2018/19 campaign.
During that summer, Arsenal signed Saliba for a fee believed to be around £27m. As part of the deal, the defender rejoined the French side on loan for the 2019/20 season.
Saliba made 17 appearances for Saint-Ettiene in 2019/20 in a season affected by injury and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Frenchman returned to the Gunners ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. Despite Arsenal struggling at points this season, he is yet to make a senior appearance for Mikel Arteta’s side.
On Monday it was announced that he had joined Ligue 1 side Nice on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Edu claimed it was mutually decided that another loan was best for the player’s progress:
“William Saliba is a player with a huge amount of talent and potential. We’re confident he will have a great career with us but we must remember that he is still only 19 years old and has a lot of time ahead of him.
“William experienced a very challenging time last year, with his playing time limited by injury and the early ending of the Ligue 1 season due to the pandemic.
“So together with William, we have decided that spending the rest of the season on loan with Nice is the best way for him to develop. We will be keeping in close contact with William during his time with Nice and look forward to seeing him make good progress until the end of the season.”
