We’ve ranked the top 30 to have won the most combined Match Day, Media and In-Play Dividends on the ‘football stockmarket’, a real-money betting platform where you can buy and sell footballers.
As well as capital appreciation – when a player’s share prices increases – you can currently win money via four different kinds of dividend:
Media Dividends: These reward players that are in the news the most.
Match Day Dividends: These reward players that deliver the best on-pitch performances.
In-Play Dividends: These reward you in the first 30 days of buying a player if they perform well on the pitch. Please note, these are being phased out and will not be payable after February 7.
Team of the Month Dividends: Football Index’s player points system constructs the best XI from a given calendar month, and if it contains your players, you win.
For more information on the dividend structure, see here.
Here is the top 30 dividend winners’ table for 2020:
As with the price risers, Manchester United’s mercurial midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, walked off with the dividend title too.
With just £0.13 separating him and Lionel Messi, it was a skin-of-the-teeth victory, but it was certainly no mean feat given the year Messi had, both on and off the pitch.
Whereas most of Fernandes’ winnings came through Media Dividends, Messi was more balanced, with very similar hauls from Media and Match Day Dividends, topped up with £0.66 through In-Play Dividends.
And it’s intriguing to track these splits as you go down the rankings, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo piling up similar returns across all three win mechanisms, whereas the likes of Joshua Kimmich – who finished in the top 10 – didn’t bring in a single penny in Media Dividends.
It highlights how many different approaches you can take to building your portfolio on Football Index.
One of the ways to make the most winnings via dividends is to bet on players who end up making big transfers to the Premier League.
But from a Match Day perspective, the Premier League is far from the only choice.
With the presence of big-hitters Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Ligue 1 has been a happy hunting ground for Match Day traders for a long time – but there were other cut-price options who had an excellent year.
Lille’s Yusuf Yazici won ‘star player’ – the dividend given to the highest-scoring player of any category on a given day – three times in 2020, with a number of other strong finishes.
Given he is still priced at just £1.47 and clearly in the best form of his career, he looks like representing good value for some time to come.
Montpellier’s Teji Savanier was perhaps an even more unexpected star of 2020, with the late-breakout forward – he will be 30 this year – racking up £1.01 in dividends per share.
With the likes of Hoffenheim’s unheralded Andrej Kramaric also lighting up the Bundesliga, who could be the next under-the-radar stars to make a breakthrough in 2021?
Long touted as one of Italy’s finest young forwards, it’s taken a while for Berardi to reach his potential.
But he’s certainly come somewhere near that in the last 18 months, and he has seven goals and four assists in Serie A so far this term.
Still only 26 – and trading at only £1.14 – the Sassuolo man could have even bigger things ahead.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Alario has the best goal conversion and shot accuracy stats of anyone in the Bundesliga in 2020-21.
Yes, better even than Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland.
If he can stay fit for the rest of the campaign, the 28-year-old Argentine might be knocking on their door for the most goals in the German top flight too.
Nine goals and four assists for Lyon this season make Ekambi one of Ligue 1’s most prolific forwards, and with Memphis Depay set to stay alongside him for the rest of the season, that partnership could be one to watch.
At just £0.55 and with an impressive 23% dividend yield in the last 12 months, is Ekambi worth a place in your portfolio?
