Tomayia Colvin Education, an online education platform for photographers that features speakers of color and celebrates diversity, is hosting its inaugural photography conference, The Cookout. The Cookout will be held at the Read House in Chattanooga Sunday through Wednesday this week.
The Cookout features an all-black photography speaker line up and hopes to fill a void in the photography industry by providing photographers of color “an opportunity to network, grow professionally and take their photography and business skills up a notch.”
The conference began with an outdoor “Cookout” on Sunday in the park, followed by two full days of hands on photography, business and marketing courses.
Conference attendees will be able to apply what they’ve learned during the day during the afternoon “styled shoots” with lead instructors. In addition, photography vendors will display and demonstrate photography techniques for editing, tools for showcasing their client work, and ways to develop a standout website during the conference on-site expo.
Ms. Colvin said, “Opportunities for minority speakers to speak at large conferences and black photographers to network don’t come every day.” She hopes to give speakers of color an opportunity to teach and empower their community.
The Cookout’s instructors include industry leaders such as Chip Dizard, Kanayo Adibe, Keith Cepheus, Teshorn Jackson, Trunetta Atwater, Tim Riddick and many more.
